About Us

In 1955, a small group of New Orleanians in answer to a newspaper plea for men with singing hearts to form the harmonizing group which became the nucleus of the first New Orleans chapter. Through faithful and intensive labor, the group was built up to a position strong enough to receive a charter from the SPEBSQSA on February 5, 1955.

The organization first established a regular meeting place at the Tulane University Student Center.

In 1972, the Westbank of New Orleans held the Riverside Chapter of the SQEBSQSA. They had Albert Schellhaas as their president. Hugh Murphy directed the Showboat Chorus of the Riverside Chapter.

The Eastbank housed the Crescent City Chapter of the SPEBSQSA with Sol Lepow as president. They had the Mardi Gras Chorus.

In order to combine their talents and create a larger chorus, the two chapters merged in 1972 with Gray Robinson as the first president of the newly-formed Greater New Orleans Chapter of the SPEBSQSA.

The Greater New Orleans Chapter proudly boasts the Mardi Gras Chorus as one of its own. The Chorus has been going strong since the 1972 merger.
